Bronze for UWB Floorball Team at the University League Finals

Following the success of the university football and volleyball teams, UWB’s floorball players have also made their mark on the University League. They secured bronze medals at the final tournament in Prague, earning the UWB its first-ever podium finish in the University Floorball League.

The Floorball team from the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen achieved a historic success. In the University League, they advanced to the final tournament and won their first bronze medal. Their best result to date had been reaching the quarterfinals. “We finally did it! I have to thank the guys for their attitude and dedication. We were probably the only team in the final tournament without any Extraliga players, but the team’s performance and the guys’ dedication were exemplary. The bronze is absolutely well-deserved,” said team manager Pavel Červenka from the UWb Institute of Physical Education and Sports.

At the tournament in Prague, the West Bohemian team defeated the University of Pardubice 7–2 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, however, they lost to the strong Charles University team 5–8 after a hard-fought battle, with the opponent scoring the last two goals into an empty net during a UWB power play. The Charles University floorball team went on to win the final match as well, securing this year’s championship title.

“It’s some consolation for our players that they were eliminated by the best team in the competition. But even the bronze medals are a great achievement,” Červenka summarized. The Pilsner team shares third place with the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem, which lost to the team from the VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava.

This season, the UWB team dominated both the regular season and the playoffs, qualifying as a seeded team for the final tournament. In mid-June, the eight best university teams out of nineteen registered teams gathered in Prague. Details are available on the Floorball League’s Instagram.
