Balance as one of the fundamental principles of life. Not a fixed state, but a dynamic process that takes shape in the tension between opposites. This is the curatorial concept behind the new exhibition project by the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. The project, titled Balance (Rovnováha), comprises two exhibitions. They open on Wednesday, May 20, with a vernissage at 6:30 p.m. and run through Tuesday, July 4. Both respond to the current social context marked by the climate crisis, conflicts, migration, societal polarization, and the pressure of digital technologies.

The exhibition at the Pilsen City Gallery (GAMP) will showcase a wide range of media, including audiovisual and interactive projects, painting, sculpture, photography, and graphic design. The works respond to the tension between the digital and physical worlds, information overload, and the changing nature of interpersonal relationships. A fashion show by the Fashion Design studio will accompany the exhibition opening.

The exhibition at the Pilsen City Gallery is followed by a show at the Ladislav Sutnar Gallery (GLS), which builds on the faculty’s natural focus on design. A significant portion of the exhibition consists of works from the Metal and Jewelry studio, in which the theme of balance is reflected in the work with materials, weight, and tension. Other design disciplines are also represented, such as fashion design, interior and furniture design, graphic design, poster art, and illustration.

Visitors can also take a guided tour of both exhibitions on Wednesday, June 10. The guided tour will begin at 4:00 p.m. at GAMP and then move to GLS.
