The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen has received with sorrow the news that Petr Hofmann, former dean of the faculty, has passed away at the age of 82. On April 2, his closest family and friends gathered to bid him a final farewell in a private ceremony.

Petr Hofmann led the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from 1991 to 1994, becoming its first dean following the establishment of the independent University of West Bohemia. “He was a man of great dignity, well-liked among students because he was always willing to devote his attention and time to them,” recalled the current dean, Vladimír Duchek, who had previously been his assistant.

Assoc. Prof. Ing. Petr Hofmann, CSc. (*1943) graduated in 1965 from the University of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Pilsen. In 1969, he became an assistant professor at the Department of Machining Technology at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, where he primarily taught machining theory, machining technology, and assembly technology. In his research, he specialized, among other areas, in mathematical methods for optimizing the cutting process. He maintained long-term cooperation with foreign universities, particularly with the university in Trondheim, Norway, and the Technical University in Munich, Germany.
