While in Western tradition it was a prestigious art form, in China, sculpture was perceived for centuries as a craft associated with ritual or religious functions. Helena Heroldová, curator of the China, Tibet, Mongolia, and Vietnam collections at the Náprstek Museum of Asian, African, and American Cultures in Prague, will focus on the differences between sculpture in Europe and China. She will show how these differences are reflected in materials, iconography, and aesthetics. Listeners will learn about the oldest sculptures from ancient tombs, and there will also be a discussion of Buddhist sculpture, which fundamentally transformed Chinese visual culture. Helena Heroldová will also briefly discuss small-scale artistic crafts and indicate how contemporary Chinese artists are building on traditional iconography.
The lecture History of Sculpture in China begins on Monday, March 2, at 10:15 a.m. in the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art building at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. The organizers note that it will be held in English.
