Are men and women equal in science? The role of gender in academia and the changes needed will be discussed at Papírna Plzeň in February. The University of West Bohemia is hosting the event Breaking the Myth of Meritocracy and Gender Stereotypes in Science.

Admission: free of charge, registration required
Intended for: the public, students, and employees at the University of West Bohemia

Is science truly universal and does gender still matter in it? These and other questions will be discussed at a talk marking the  International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) on Wednesday, 11 February. The event starts at 6:00 p.m. at Papírna Plzeň and will address the current state of Czech science, the need for systemic change, and ways individuals and research institutions can help create a fairer and more inclusive academic environment.

Zuzana Andreska, PhD student and researcher at the National Contact Center for Gender and Science, Pavlína Janebová, Director of Research at the Association for International Affairs, and IT and data science researcher Lucie Houdová from the NTIS research centre at UWB have accepted invitations to participate in the discussion. The evening will also feature Petr Šimon, Ombudsman of the UWB and the discussion will be moderated by Ondřej Horký-Hlucháň, senior researcher at the Institute of International Relations Prague. The programme includes the launch of the handbook  Inclusive Language. Registration is required.

The UN General Assembly declared the IDWGS in 2015. Every year, this day (11.2.) highlights the stories and achievements of inspiring women who have made their mark in science. At the same time, it draws attention to the barriers that still prevent some women from entering or fully developing their potential in scientific fields.
