The Faculty of Arts of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen will once again participate in the Pilsen Courtyards event. This time, it will open the courtyards of two of its buildings in the city center, which represent the connection between modern science and the deep history of Pilsen. On Saturday, May 23, interested visitors can visit the Center for Archaeological and Anthropological Research at Sedláčkova 38, as well as the courtyard at Sedláčkova 15. Both locations will be open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
The main attraction for those interested in modern scientific methods will be guided tours of the laboratories at Sedláčkova 38, including those of the Department of Archaeology and the Department of Anthropology. These facilities, which normally serve research and teaching purposes, will show visitors what is currently being worked on. People will be able to learn about the procedures experts from the Faculty of Arts use to study the human past, from the analysis of skeletal remains to the processing of artifacts. The scientific program will be complemented by music, a dance workshop, author readings, and art activities for children.
The second location at Sedláčkova 15 will offer visitors a visual experience right at the entrance. The faculty's entrance area is alive with bold, colorful wall paintings that stand in sharp contrast to the austere architecture of the inner courtyard. This very courtyard houses one of the university archaeologists' most valuable finds – a medieval well. According to experts, it was likely built at the time of Pilsen's founding, representing a direct link between the academic grounds and the region's oldest history.
Pilsen Courtyards is organized by the Foundation of 700 Years of the City of Pilsen (Nadace 700 let města Plzně). The goal is to showcase the city's charm and reveal its hidden secrets. The complete program is available on the event's website. Admission to the laboratory tours and the accompanying program is free for all visitors. More information can be found on the Pilsen Courtyards webpage.
