The trophy for winning the university football league has already been placed in the display cabinet at UWB for this season. The gold-medal team, together with their coaches, has now visited the Rector’s Office to close a successful season symbolically — and at the same time open the next one.

In the final week of November, the grounds at Prokopávka in Plzeň hosted the showdown for the university football league title. The UWB team ultimately defeated the University of South Bohemia 3:1.

As a keepsake of that winter evening, the players presented the rector, right in the doorway, with a framed photograph from the final celebrations. “I was pleased to witness your victory here at home in Plzeň,” the rector said when meeting with the players and coaches. He thanked them not only for the title but also for balancing their studies with representing the university on the pitch, and he expressed his appreciation to the coaches for keeping the university team running so effectively.

Which match was the toughest of the season in the players’ view? “The final against the University of South Bohemia. It was demanding both technically and mentally,” one of the students summed up.

A new season of the university football competition kicks off at the beginning of March. After the exam period at the turn of July and August, however, the players will face an international challenge. As league champions, they will represent both the university and the Czech Republic at the European Universities Games in Italy. A squad of twenty-five selected players will travel. “The competition will be fierce, with Europe’s leading universities competing,” said one of the coaches, Jaroslav Kovařík.

The Czech University League currently brings together sixteen higher education institutions. The current UWB squad consists of around fifty footballers who otherwise play for various clubs, not only in the Pilsen Region. At the university, however, they come together under one jersey. The team remains open to recruits. Students interested in joining can contact the UWB Institute of Physical Education and Sport directly.
