The Czech education system lacks qualified teachers in math, physics, and computer science, according to official data. The University of West Bohemia is training a new generation of educators, with FAV offering combined programs in collaboration with FPE.
While the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (FAV) guarantees top-tier subject expertise, the Faculty of Education (FPE) provides a high-quality pedagogical and didactic foundation, including the necessary practical experience. The postgraduate teacher training programs at FAV offer a wide range of study combinations. The program operates as a combined major/minor, allowing students to combine mathematics, physics, and computer science not only with each other but also with biology, chemistry, or geography. Applicants can choose from the programs Secondary School Mathematics Teaching, Secondary School Physics Teaching, and Secondary School Computer Science Teaching.
“We believe that a teacher’s role is not merely to impart formulas, but above all to teach young people to think critically and analytically. Watching students overcome their fear of this dreaded subject thanks to your guidance is a true joy and the best reward,” summarized Gabriela Holubová, head of the Department of Mathematics. According to her, the Mathematics Education for Secondary Schools program is thus the ideal choice for anyone who wishes to combine a passion for logic with a profession that has real societal impact. “Studying at FAV stands out for its friendly environment and the close integration of technical and natural science disciplines. The faculty’s STEM focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics provides students with a strong professional foundation and thus excellently prepares them for creative solutions to complex problems,” added Holubová, noting that it is precisely thanks to this well-rounded education that FAV graduates have long been among the most sought-after on the job market.
Pavel Baroch, head of the Department of Physics, is convinced that physics is a meaningful and dynamic field and the key to understanding the world around us: “The Secondary School Physics Education program teaches students to connect theory with practice and to explain physical phenomena in the context of their real-world applications.” The Secondary School Computer Science Education program offers a similar integration, combining high-quality computer science education with modern pedagogy. Students gain a solid technical foundation and stay informed about current research and faculty collaborations with IT companies. The pedagogical component is managed by the Department of Computer and Educational Technology at the Faculty of Education, University of West Bohemia. “Thanks to their combination of technical and pedagogical competencies, our graduates have long been in high demand at secondary schools,” noted Přemysl Brada, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Computing Technology.
A complete overview of the related master’s programs is available on the UWB website. Applications may be submitted until May 29.
