He was involved in the early establishment of the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAV) and subsequently of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen itself. He was the first chair of the UWB Academic Senate and served as Dean of FAV from 1992 to 1999, after which he headed the faculty´s Department of Mathematics for four years. Stanislav Míka’s name will forever be associated with the development of mathematics education at UWB. He also trained numerous successors who now work in academia and applied fields.
“I first met Professor Míka as a freshman at what was then the University of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, during lectures on mathematical analysis in the first year. Later, I encountered him as dean, for example, at graduation ceremonies. I value his approach and his contributions to our faculty, and it is an honor to continue his work. May his memory be honored,” recalled FAV Dean Miloš Železný, remembering his former colleague.
Stanislav Míka made a significant contribution to the introduction of new fields of study and to the strategic development of teaching in numerical methods and mathematical modeling. He lectured in various mathematical disciplines, from numerical methods and numerical optimization to partial differential equations and mathematical modeling. He occasionally returned to the faculty to give lectures even after his active academic career ended.
His teaching legacy is reflected in numerous teaching materials and scholarly publications that he prepared independently or in collaboration with colleagues. Among the most important are the textbooks Mathematical Analysis I, II, and III. In addition to his own academic work, he also made a significant contribution to the development of international cooperation. He established the tradition of the international IMAMM (Industrial Mathematics and Mathematical Modeling) seminars and played an important role in organizing and holding the international Modeling conferences.
Stanislav Míka was born on 5 April 1937 in Nalžovské Hory. He studied mathematics and physics at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Education in Prague, completing his university studies in 1959. He began his teaching career in Tachov, where he worked as a secondary school teacher from 1959 to 1962. In 1962, he joined the University of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Pilsen. He then devoted a substantial part of his professional life to that institution and subsequently to the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen.
