An exhibition entitled ‘Step into the Painting’, held at the University Library of the University of West Bohemia on the Bory campus, will showcase the contemporary work of Václav Malina from Tuesday, 1 September. In this exhibition, the artist once again turns his attention to specific landscapes and the human figure. However, his characteristic sense of colour, emphasis on personal experience and sensory perception remain evident in the paintings.

Another distinctive feature of Malina’s work has long been his inspiration from poetry. Lightness, playfulness, and the ability to connect seemingly unrelated motifs are reflected both in the exhibition title and in the artistic language itself. His current paintings have a calm, meditative quality and explore themes of human existence, a return to fundamental values, and the rediscovery of beauty as one such value.

This Pilsen-based painter has been associated with the local art scene for almost half a century and has undergone a significant evolution during that time, from a distinctive maverick and artist linked to the unofficial art scene of the 1980s to a respected curator, teacher, and long-standing director of the Pilsen City Gallery. Despite his advancing age, Václav Malina has not stopped creating and continues to seek new avenues of artistic expression.

An opening reception at the university library will mark the start of the exhibition of his latest work. Visitors are welcome to attend on 1 September from 5.00 pm. The Pilsen-based artist’s works will then be on display in the library until 30 September.
