The Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen continues its exhibition program in the foyer of the Black Box at the Josef Kajetán Tyl Theatre. On Thursday, 24 September, at 4:30 pm, it will launch the exhibition Near and Far with an opening reception. The exhibition will then be on view until Sunday, 29 November.
This time, the theatre spaces will bring together different approaches to contemporary visual art – from painting and drawing to photography, video experiments, and video performance. The shared starting point of the individual works is the question of closeness and distance, which here refers not only to physical space but also to the relationship between experience and imagination, the familiar and the foreign, or reality and imagination.
The exhibition explores how an emerging generation of artists views their own experience and the world around them through visual art. In their works, personal experiences meet chance situations, specific places meet imaginary landscapes, and everyday experience meets experiment. Near and Far does not set the two concepts in simple opposition. Instead, it shows their fluidity and mutual permeability. Sometimes all it takes is a change of perspective for the familiar to become strange and the distant to become surprisingly close.
The exhibition presents work by nine students in the Intermedia studio, led by Vladimír Merta with assistant Eva Šindelářová. The exhibiting artists are Anna Herzig, Anna Hušková, Tereza Kaderová, Tereza Kaup, Tomáš Kovář, Karolína Pechová, Vojtěch Sušanka, Karolína Velebová, and Jindřiška Zajacová.
The exhibition builds on the Sutnar Faculty's collaboration with the Josef Kajetán Tyl Theatre. It is the second presentation of student work in the foyer of the Black Box in the theatre's new building. This year, the collaboration between the two institutions is also developing as part of the HAVEL 26 project, which commemorates what would have been Václav Havel's birthday. It will include a special Havel-themed evening at the Sutnar Faculty on 25 November, for which the theatre is preparing a staged reading of Havel's play The Memorandum.
