In April, students, alums, and staff members of the Faculty of Health Studies at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (FZS) collectively covered more than 13,500 kilometers. Their effort earned them victory in this year’s sixth annual university-wide “Endurance Athletes of the Month” challenge. At the same time, the faculty made the largest contribution to the demanding rehabilitation of Tereza Nová, a young alpine skier and participant in the Winter Olympics in Beijing. The kilometers were converted into money, and thanks to the athletic efforts of all UWB parts, this year’s challenge raised a record total of over 65,500 CZK.
The “Endurance Athletes of the Month” charity sports challenge has been organized by the Department of Physical Education and Sports at the University of West Bohemia since 2020. It is open to both students and all university employees. Under the banner of their faculties and other departments, participants spent a month running, walking, cycling, scootering, or even inline skating to contribute to the best possible collective result. A total of 688 people took part in this year’s challenge. Participants from the Faculty of Health Studies performed best, with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering finishing second and the Faculty of Applied Sciences third. Individual performances were also evaluated. The complete results of this year’s challenge and previous editions can be found on the Měsíční Vytrvalec website. The university will officially announce the winners at the SemestrOFF event on the Bory campus on Wednesday, May 20.
The funds raised by UWB through the challenge will be transferred to the fundraising account established by the Czech Ski Association Foundation for the disabled skier Tereza. Anyone wishing to help can also contribute directly to the transparent account 214973676/0600. The funds should help cover Tereza´s necessary physical therapy costs.
The Department of Physical Education and Sport at the University of West Bohemia is also planning a charity challenge for next year. Those interested can learn how it all works and how to get involved in the Endurance Athletes of the Month on the challenge’s website, and details are also provided in this article.
