Improved threat detection and faster communication with police, firefighters, and paramedics are what the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (UWB) expects from its new campus security system. The preparation and installation of modern technologies took about a year. The system cost nearly five million CZK, with just under four million covered by a grant from the National Recovery Plan. Strengthening security has been a top priority for UWB’s leadership in recent years.
“Thanks to the new system, we have more accurate and faster information about what is happening on campus, which allows us to evaluate situations better and respond appropriately,” said ZČU security chief Jan Blahož.
The safety of students and staff is now also monitored by sound detectors that can reliably detect dangerous situations, such as gunfire. They can also be triggered by shouting. The system additionally connects to cameras. All information is processed by a new control center that, thanks to a high-speed 5G network, can immediately share details of a situation with police or other emergency services, including via mobile devices.
However, the head of security, Blahož, ruled out the possibility of misuse of such a system at ZČU: “I would like to emphasize that the outcomes are approached not only from a technological perspective, but also with respect for the privacy of students and staff, so that normal university life is not restricted.”
The modernization of security infrastructure is a strategic step for the UWB. It is also another way to make better use of modern technologies. The project is based on the concept of so-called smart cities. Strengthening campus security thus also contributes to improving safety and to the development of digital solutions in the region.
