In May, the streets of Klatovy come alive with an extensive exhibition of sculptures and other three-dimensional objects. This year's 5th edition of the contemporary art festival in public space, titled Sculptures in the Streets, will present works by 10 students, teachers, and graduates of the Sculpture and Space studio at the Sutnar Faculty in Pilsen. The festival will open on Saturday, May 23rd at 3:00 PM with a vernissage at Přemysl Otakar II Square, featuring a guided tour of the exhibition with curators and participating artists. The exhibition will then be on display at various locations throughout Klatovy until the end of October.
The concept of the exhibition stems from the aim of presenting art in public spaces to a broad audience. "Art in public space is an open dialogue between the artists and both the general and professional public. The situation established by this dialogue directly affects a wide spectrum of viewers, encouraging interpretation, reflection, and the formation of one's own perspective. The viewer comes into contact with a work of art and takes away not only the visual impression itself, but also a deeper inner experience," said Daniel Doležal, one of the exhibiting artists and an assistant at the Sculpture and Space studio at the Sutnar Faculty.
The studio, known for its comprehensive approach to sculptural work, is currently led by sculptors Benedikt Tolar and Luděk Míšek. Their works can also be seen in Klatovy. According to Doležal, all the exhibited works are accomplished and playful: "The scale, scope, and technique used to create the works shape a unique situation." Visitors to Klatovy can also see works by František Dvořák, Viktor Frič, Annette Frouzová, Josef Hakl, Renáta Kocmanová, Adam Trbušek, and David Tureček during the festival.
The Sculptures in the Streets festival is organized by the Klatovy/Klenová Gallery, which aims to gradually create a platform for presenting top-quality work by graduates of Czech art schools. The curatorial concept of the show was taken on by artists Zuzana Kantová and Petr Krátký. With this festival, the gallery builds on its previous collaboration with Czech sculptor Jiří Beránek, the founder of the Sculpture and Space studio at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen.
