Six medals, including one gold. The University of West Bohemia in Pilsen once again made its mark at this year’s Czech Academic Games. The gold medal was won by Adam Fliegel, a student at the Faculty of Economics, in the shot put. In a contest decided by mere centimeters, he delivered the best performance, throwing the shot 15.57 meters. He was just one centimeter shy of the second-best performance in this year’s 24th edition of the competition.

Athletes from the University of Pilsen also brought home four silver medals from the Academic Games in Brno during the penultimate week of June. These were won by runner Jan Riegel from the Faculty of Applied Sciences in the 5-kilometer run; judoka Petr Pešek from the Faculty of Education in the under-100-kg weight class; Denisa Hrušková from the Faculty of Health Studies in the hammer throw; and Eliška Dobešová from the same faculty in the discus throw. In this event, the University of West Bohemia also took third place, with Sára Dočekalová from the Faculty of Education winning the bronze medal. 

In the overall standings, the University of Pilsen finished in 14th place. According to Petr Šlajs, director of the Institute of Physical Education and Sports, while this isn’t the best result in the university’s history, there are reasons for it: “Unfortunately, some promising athletes didn’t end up traveling to the Academic Games, so team sports didn’t fare particularly well. Many team sports are no longer included in the games; they have their own university leagues, and we’ve actually been successful in those recently.”

The 24th Czech Academic Games were hosted this year by the Brno University of Technology. Nearly 1,200 university students from across the Czech Republic competed for championship titles in 21 sports disciplines. The overall and individual results are available on the competition’s website.
