Research into semiconductor technologies, an essential component of modern electronics for healthcare, energy, quantum technologies, and transport, will total over 500 million CZK. As one of the most significant Czech initiatives in the field, the project bridges academia and the private sector to strengthen the Czech Republic's technological position and contribute to European self-sufficiency. Representatives of all participating organizations agreed on these goals at the kick-off meeting in Brno in June.

Brno University of Technology (BUT) serves as the main coordinator of the initiative. Alongside UWB, the consortium includes the Czech Technical University in Prague, Masaryk University, Charles University, and institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The industrial sector is strongly represented by companies such as onsemi, Škoda Electric, Thermo Fisher Scientific, CRYTUR, UJP Praha, ADVACAM, and others. “Semiconductors are the foundation of today's digital society and a key driver of future economic prosperity. Semiconductors4All creates a platform that enables the direct transfer of research results into real-world applications,” said lead project investigator Jiří Háze from BUT.

The University of West Bohemia plays a vital role in this nationwide consortium. A research team from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FEL) will lead the research area focused on power semiconductors, electronics, and control systems. Jan Michalík and Pavel Drábek presented UWB’s research objectives at the kick-off meeting at FEKT BUT in Brno. “Our research focuses primarily on silicon carbide power modules and converters used to switch and control high electrical power, for instance, in electrified transport or energy applications,” stated Jan Michalík from FEL UWB.

Beyond accelerating the deployment of new technologies in industry through close cooperation with companies, universities emphasize that this collaborative initiative will create high-skilled jobs and engage a new generation of experts, including undergraduate and doctoral students, in cutting-edge research.

The Semiconductors4All project aligns with the objectives of the National Semiconductor Strategy and has secured funding from the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (TA ČR). The Czech National Semiconductor Cluster, which fosters long-term cooperation among academia, industry, and public administration, played a key role in preparing the initiative.
