Athletes representing the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen brought home silver and bronze medals from the final round of the seventh season of the University Fencing League. The university achieved its strongest results in the men’s épée competition, where David Matoušek finished second and Martin Jakeš third. The category was won by Robin Ivančo from Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem.
The sixth round of the league was hosted at the end of the second week of May in the Sokol sports hall in the Petřín district of Pilsen, with support from the University of West Bohemia. University students from across the Czech Republic traveled to western Bohemia, making the competition not only a showcase of sporting performances but also an opportunity for the fencing community to come together.
“We were very pleased by the participation of competitors from various universities and by the high-quality sporting atmosphere throughout the day. Organizing a tournament like this is demanding, but thanks to the cooperation of volunteers, referees, and partners, everything went smoothly without complications,” said tournament director Pavel Michalec. According to the organizers, the tournament offered a full-day program of dynamic and closely contested bouts, confirming the high standard of university fencing and the growing interest in the sport among students.
Bronze medallist Martin Jakeš also praised the league tournament in the West Bohemian capital: “We are happy that another round of the University Fencing League was brought to Pilsen and that we were able to build on the success of previous years. Events like this are important not only for the competitors themselves, but also for developing the university sports environment and cooperation between universities.” The University of West Bohemia has long supported university sports, and students can also become acquainted with fencing through credited courses that further develop their skills in the discipline.
The University of West Bohemia was also represented in the women’s category during the sixth round of the league. However, Viktorie Tuhá was less successful this time, finishing in tenth place, second from the bottom. Michaela Šimková from Brno University of Technology won the category. Second place went to Viktorie Novotná from Charles University in Prague, while Kristýna Dvouletá and Tereza Pikousová shared third place. In the men’s épée competition, the home team representing the University of West Bohemia and Sokol Plzeň Petřín also included Richard Šedina and Atilla Vatansever alongside David Matoušek and Martin Jakeš.
