UWB is collecting books for people with Alzheimer’s disease. Anyone can donate

Books lying unnoticed at home can bring joy to others in February. The University Library of the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň is launching its ninth book drive, this time for clients of the Senevida Nepomuk care home. The collection runs from 2 to 27 February.

Throughout February, donors can bring new books or titles in good condition published after 2010 to the branches of the University Library of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. The books will serve not only clients of the Senevida Nepomuk care home, which looks after people with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, but also their families and staff. “This year, at the home’s request, we are collecting both children’s and adult literature,” said Miloslava Faitová, Director of the UWB University Library.

Ideally, the donations should be books that donors themselves would choose to read to pass the time. “Our facility’s library is not very large, and we enjoy reading with our clients. As for the type of literature, we also welcome children’s books, as our clients are in a demanding health situation and it is sometimes appropriate to choose larger print and illustrations,” added Petra Štenglová, Director of Senevida Nepomuk.

Librarians will accept the books from 2 to 27 February at branches of the University Library: at the Bory campus, at the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Law Library at 16 Sady Pětatřicátníků, and at the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Health Care Studies Library at 51 Klatovská Street in Pilsen.

The collection is held to mark International Book Giving Day, which falls on 14 February. This year, the University Library of the University of West Bohemia is joining the initiative for the ninth time. In previous years, the donated books have gone, for example, to the Psychiatric Clinic of Plzeň University Hospital, to people experiencing homelessness through the Blízký soused (Close Neighbour) project, or to Bory Prison. The record year was two years ago, when donors brought nearly 3,200 books for the St. Zdislava Home for Mothers with Children in Need.
