UWB student breaks national academic deadlift record

Tereza Brotánková from the Faculty of Education lifted a 180-kilogram barbell at the Czech Academic Championships. In powerlifting and specifically in the deadlift event, she not only broke the academic national record but also won silver in her weight category.

Twenty-three-year-old Tereza Brotánková represented the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen this year at the Czech Academic Championships for the second time in her sports career. She performed well in the combined women’s category over 76 kilograms last year and again secured a silver medal this year. However, she broke the national academic deadlift record in her original weight category for the first time this November in Mladá Boleslav, when she lifted a 180-kilogram barbell.

“I really appreciate the opportunity to represent our university. Being able to compete for UWB is a huge motivation for me. I’m glad I managed to achieve such a result, and I would like to continue representing the university in the future,” said Tereza Brotánková, who is studying in the follow-up Master’s programme Mathematics and Physics Education for Lower Secondary Schools at the Faculty of Education.

At the 2025 Czech Academic Championships, Brotánková competed in the highest weight category over 84 kilograms. Due to the low number of competitors, however, the organisers merged this category with the lower one into a combined category over 76 kilograms. The winner was an athlete from the lower weight class from the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague. Although Tereza Brotánková finished second, her performance broke the record in her actual highest weight category. The complete results of the 2025 Czech Academic Championships can be found here.

Tereza Brotánková, a student of the Faculty of Education at UWB, has long competed for the TJ Sokol Vejprnice club, but she has only been active in powerlifting since 2024. Even so, she regularly places on the podium and is among the most successful young athletes on the Czech scene:
