FAV Achievements Science and research
The third Doctor of Science at the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAV) and the fourth at the entire University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. The title of DSc. has now been awarded to computer graphics expert Václav Skala. The Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) has thus recognized his research in the field of so-called meshless graphics methods. The academy’s prestigious title represents the highest professional scientific award and confirms the exceptional level of Skala’s scientific work and his contribution to the field.
The Pilsen professor impressed an international panel of experts led by computer scientist Jan Flusser during the defense of his dissertation. In it, he focused on advanced computational methods in computer graphics and data visualization, specifically on meshless methods and their practical applications. He developed several of these methods himself. They will aid in processing measured data, solving engineering problems in electrical and mechanical engineering, and visualizing large-scale scientific and technical data across disciplines. Skala defended his thesis, titled “Meshless Methods in Computer Graphics,” at the Czech Academy of Sciences in March and received the prestigious academic title a month later.
The title DSc. (Doctor Scientiarum), or Doctor of Science, has been awarded by the Czech Academy of Sciences since 2002. It is conferred upon scientists who demonstrate exceptional qualifications through groundbreaking and original scientific achievements recognized by the international academic community. At the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, this prestigious title has also been awarded in previous years to Martin Gojda, a prehistory expert from the Department of Archaeology at the Faculty of Philosophy; Tomáš Kaiser from the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Applied Sciences; and Eduard Rohan from the Department of Mechanics at the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
Prof. Ing. Václav Skala, CSc., DSc. (*1951) focuses on computer graphics algorithms, data visualization, data structures, geometric algebra, and quantum computers. He began teaching computer graphics in 1975 at the University of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Pilsen (the predecessor of the University of West Bohemia). Since 1990, he has taught at the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAV) of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. He has also worked at Charles University, among other institutions. Abroad, he has collaborated with Brunel University in London, among others, and has lectured at the NATO Advanced Study Institute in NATO member countries. In 2010, he received the “Fellow of the Eurographics Association” award from the international association for computer graphics for his long-standing professional achievements and organizational activities in the field. Details are available on Václav Skala’s website.
