On Saturday, March 28, around twenty volunteers from the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen joined the nationwide Ukliďme Česko initiative. They headed out into the campus surroundings, where they collected 22 bags of waste.

Four tires, two speakers, and even a hand truck. These were among the unusual items collected by volunteers who came to clean up the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen campus as part of the national initiative. A total of 24 people, including three children, gathered in front of the rectorate building. „After handing out gloves and bags, participants split into smaller groups and set out to clean an area of roughly two hectares. The largest amount of waste was found in the vegetation behind the university library and in the space between the NTIS research center and the tram line,” said Barbora Poláková, the university’s sustainability coordinator, who organized the event.

Volunteers also found a mobile phone, which has already been returned to its owner. A more hazardous discovery was a used syringe, which was handed over to the municipal police on site.

In total, the volunteers filled 22 bags of waste. According to the organizers, more than half contained plastic, three bags were filled with cans, and around 8 kilograms of paper were collected, along with about 25 kilograms of metal. In addition, participants removed bulkier waste such as polystyrene and sheet metal panels, as well as discarded clothing.

“We wanted not only to clean up the university surroundings, but also to highlight how easily public spaces can turn into a mess,” Poláková added. Volunteers spent several hours on the cleanup.
