How can digital technologies help pupils better understand mathematics while developing skills they will need beyond the classroom? This was the focus of the bachelor’s thesis by Adam Janoušek from the Faculty of Education of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. His work impressed the jury in the international round of this year’s Student Scientific and Professional Activity competition (SVOČ) in Bratislava so much that it awarded him first place in the relevant category focused on the didactics of mathematics.
“I believe that digital technologies in teaching can help pupils better understand mathematical connections and develop the skills needed for today’s world,” said Adam Janoušek. He sees first place in his category as recognition of the work he devoted to the topic.
His faculty colleague Štěpán Peroutka also achieved success in the Czech-Slovak round of the competition. His work, which focused on the use of digital tools to visualize mathematical concepts, was selected among the 20 best entries.
Peroutka explored how digital applications and visualizations can make mathematical concepts clearer and easier to understand. “Mathematics is often very abstract for pupils, and visualizations offer an important way to give different operations and concepts a concrete meaning. Thanks to digital technologies, they can also become interactive,” the student explained.
For the University of West Bohemia, the success at SVOČ 2026 is proof of the high-quality professional and didactic preparation of students training for the teaching profession. “We are proud to educate a new generation of mathematics teachers – teachers who will not only have an excellent command of their field, but who will also be able to convey mathematical knowledge to today’s generation of pupils using modern and effective methods,” said Miroslava Huclová from the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Technical Education at the Faculty of Education.
This year’s international round of the student scientific and professional work competition brought together dozens of mathematics teacher training students from faculties of education across Czechia and Slovakia in Bratislava in mid-June. They presented works created as part of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral study programs and defended them before an expert jury.
