Press Release University Public
"The University of West Bohemia makes a
significant contribution to the prosperity and attractiveness of the city of
Pilsen and the Pilsen region. Therefore, we want to celebrate its 30th anniversary
both with our students, graduates and partners, and the public. It makes us
happy when people follow the activities of the university and when, in
particular, they see it as an important institution that makes Pilsen a
university city. Therefore, we invite everyone to celebrate our thirtieth
birthday with us”, says the Rector
Miroslav Holeček.
The
highlight of celebrations of the 30th anniversary will be the Day in Campus, which will be held on
Tuesday, 21st of September. It will be a huge festival. The campus
will host three stages - the smallest one will be dedicated to slam poetry and
visitors will find it in the courtyard of the Faculty of Mechanical
Engineering. Two music stages, one next to ziggurat located in the vicinity of
Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art, and the other in front of the Faculty
of Electrical Engineering, it will feature both professional and student bands.
At 8 p.m., the main stage will host the performance of the band Tata Bojs, who have recently been awarded
the Angel Award. Entrance is free.
The
birthday festival will inaugurate the new academic year and, therefore, the
event Year One will be part of the
celebration. This event is dedicated to first-year students, who will have the
opportunity to get to know the university and its environment. Freshmen can
look forward to a program packed with information, tours, and fun activities.
The Day in
Campus includes the event Beer with the
Rector. This popular informal meeting between students and the Rector takes
place at the beginning of the academic year. It was first held in 2016 to
commemorate the 25th anniversary of the university and from then it
has been regularly organised in the courtyard of the Pilsner Urquell brewery.
At the event, visitors can taste a special beer that was brewed and will be
tapped by the Rector Miroslav Holeček himself. This event has gained popularity
year after year, and in 2019 it was visited by more than two and a half
thousand students.
A UWB stand
will offer new promotional items with a
logo celebrating the 30th anniversary, designed by Nicoleta Puiu,
a student of the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art. The university will also present a clothing
collection with the hashtag COPATUTOJE. With this project, the university
joins the City of Pilsen and the brand Horsefeathers and enriches the collection
with a new design. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Oncology
and Radiotherapy Clinic at the University Hospital in Pilsen. However, there
will be more possibilities to support a good cause as the Bone Marrow Transplant Foundation will be present at the event. The Faculty of Applied Sciences has
been cooperating with the Czech National Marrow Donor Registry since 2009. The
partnership focuses on the research and development of information tools that
facilitate the process of stem cell transplantation. Visitors will have the
opportunity to support the foundation's activities by registering into the
registry or making a financial donation.
In
September, the university will present an anniversary book, which looks back on the past three decades
and recalls the most important milestones of its history, set in a societal
context. The book includes stories in a comic book format which depict the
achievements of individual faculties and research centres. The illustrations
were created by students of the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art under
the guidance of the renowned illustrator Renáta Fučíková. In addition, selected
chapters will form part of an exhibition commemorating the 30 years
anniversary, which will be on display throughout September in Smetana
Orchards in front of the Study and Scientific Library of the Pilsen Region.
In
September, the university will participate in the event Literature Night,
which will take visitors to normally inaccessible places located at the
university. In November, the university will organize a Social Evening for
Graduates and Partners, which will be held in cooperation with J.K. Tyl
Theatre.
All
information on the celebrations can be found on the web page www.zcu.cz/30let.
"Moreover,
the year 2021 is also the year when the University of West Bohemia implements a
new strategic plan and enters the next five-year period 2021-2025",
says the Rector Miroslav Holeček. The credo of UWB for the following period is:
The best thing WE can do for the future world is to help YOU do it. "Our
graduates will create the world of the 21st century and it is our
task to educate them so that they understand its wider context and can make a
significant contribution to its positive and sustainable development",
explains the Rector.
The
strategic plan for the period 2021-2025 contains four basic priorities. "We
want to strengthen interdisciplinarity in education and creative activities
because the interconnection and cooperation between disciplines are our strong
points that we would like to boost in the future. Our priorities also include
the connection of education and creative activities with practice. We
particularly want to strengthen our cooperation with foreign countries,
especially with Bavaria. We understand the beneficial role the
university has for the region, as it increases its potential and contributes to
the growth of its importance and attractiveness for students and foreign
partners. We want to strengthen this influence not only in Pilsen but also in
the Karlovy Vary Region, where we operate as the only public higher education
institution," says the Rector Miroslav Holeček.
