For the 10th year students of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen can take a course in swordsmanship as part of physical education. Classes under the guidance of the coaches of Sokol Plzeň Petřín 1919 offer both basic and advanced training and open the way to participation in the championships.

Basic motor skills, techniques with training weapons and interaction in pairs, for advanced students, trained fencing with a trainer and full-fledged free fencing on electronic signaling equipment. All this is offered by the epee fencing course to students of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (UWB), who have been able to complete it here for 10 years as a credit. Students can register for the course at the Institute of Physical Education and Sports (UTS).

“The fencing section of Sokol Plzeň Petřín 1919, whose coaches take care of students of the University of West Bohemia, also works with promising individuals and prepares them for competitive starts in the University Fencing League. In its sixth year of existence, it offers the opportunity to measure forces across universities in the Czech Republic,” said Pavel Červenka from UTS.

The highlight of the season is the annual Academic Championship in epee, foil and sabre, which this year is hosted by the University of West Bohemia, on June 9-10. “Some of the students develop a deeper relationship with fencing and continue it after completing their studies, often in a competitive form. In the last two years, there has been a significant increase in interest among students, which points to the importance of this sport within the university. This is also evidenced by the many dozens of successful graduates who have passed through the hands of experienced coaches from the Fencing Section of the Sokol Plzeň Petřín 1919, which is celebrating 10 years of cooperation with our alma mater,” described Pavel Michalec, head of the clubs.

“Thanks to the professional guidance of the trainers, I can recommend the course to anyone interested in an interesting sport in a friendly team. As part of the follow-up courses, those interested can go through all levels of sword fencing instruction, as well as the basics of saber or bayonet fighting,” said Atilla Vatansever, a course participant.

Fencing is one of the traditional sports practiced on campus for more than a hundred years, specifically sports fencing or modern fencing, which has remained on the Olympic Games program since 1896 as one of the five sports until now. It is considered an elegant gentleman's sport and is taught at only four universities in the Czech Republic, which, in addition to the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, include the Brno University of Technology, Charles University, and the University of Economics in Prague.

This year, the fencing courses are supported by the Grant Support for Student Activities (GRAS-25-007), which enabled the expansion of the material base for fencing instruction.
