More interest and funding need to be invested in the energy sector, quantum technologies, as well as teaching and healthcare fields, said the Rector of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Miroslav Lávička, and the Governor of the Pilsen Region, Kamal Farhan, during a joint meeting.

Not only support for education but also research and the preparation of new projects that could significantly contribute to the development of the Pilsen Region were the topics of a joint meeting between the Governor of the Pilsen Region, Kamal Farhan, and the Rector of the University of West Bohemia, Miroslav Lávička. The meeting took place on Monday, February 24, at the university.

The rector and the governor agreed on the need to strengthen study programs in strategic technical fields such as semiconductors, chips, nuclear energy, and quantum technologies. However, support for teaching and non-medical healthcare fields is equally important. "Our common goal is to motivate more young people from the Pilsen Region to study at the University of West Bohemia and to ensure that they want to stay here after completing their studies. This is crucial for the sustainable development of the region, in which we, as a university, play a significant role," said UWB Rector Miroslav Lávička.

Governor Kamal Farhan mentioned that he would also like to see study programs focused on psychology established in the Pilsen Region. "In the future, we consider the introduction of Psychology and Special Education in a follow-up master's program at UWB to be very important and significant, as there is currently a critical shortage of these qualified professionals in schools in the Pilsen Region. This issue is particularly felt by school counseling centers, which have long suffered from insufficient staffing in specialized professions," said Regional governor Kamal Farhan, adding that it is desirable for every school in the region to have its own counseling center, which is currently not possible due to a lack of specialists.

"Thanks to cooperation with the university, we are establishing contacts that are very important for setting up education in the region. We particularly value the collaboration of teaching staff from various faculties who teach students in regional secondary schools as subject-matter experts. We would appreciate having even more of these experts," added the Governor of the Pilsen Region. "For the University of West Bohemia, the Pilsen Region is a key strategic partner, which is why our regular meetings with the regional leadership, where we can discuss these topics, are extremely valuable. I am very pleased that this tradition continues under the new governor," concluded UWB Rector.

The discussion also touched on possible future activities of UWB in the Karlovy Vary Region. Further debates on this topic will be held between UWB leadership and the governor’s colleague from the neighboring region, Regional governor Jana Mračková Vildumetzová.
