Aesthetic conference addressed the possible relations between performativity and narrativity

Conference Cooperation University

The Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, the Society for Aesthetics of the CAS and the Slovak Association for Aesthetics organised a Slovak-Czech aesthetic conference in Pilsen on 25 and 26 October.

The conference, called Pernadeska, had the ambitious goal of exploring the nature and relationship of three important dimensions of the experience of artworks, or their significance in non-art aesthetic experience: narrativity as the articulation of a story, performativity as the creation of a situation or the realization of a procedure and idea, and descriptiveness as the capture of the properties of an object or environment.

"The series of aesthetic conferences has been organised by selected Czech and Slovak academic institutions together with the two professional societies since 2016. This year's edition is certainly one of the strongest in terms of its scope, if only because it is held in three places, i.e. in two lecture rooms at the Faculty of Philosophy and in the Gallery of the European House of the Study and Research Library in Pilsen. This allowed us to offer the conference participants a very varied programme, but also the opportunity to get to know the unique atmosphere of Pilsen," says Miloš Ševčík from the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy, the conference's expert guarantor.

Around 180 people participated in the event and all the related activities over the four days. During the conference a number of prominent experts gave invited lectures by aesthetician and philosopher from Charles University Prof. Vlastimil Zuska, Slovak aesthetician and philosopher Prof. Peter Michalovič from Comenius University in Bratislava and philosopher doc. In addition to the two varied conference days in three buildings, it was also possible to take part in additional activities, such as a tour of Loos' interiors, and the opening of an exhibition of paintings by the academic painter Miloš Ševčík Sr. in the Gallery of the European House of the Pilsen Region Study and Research Library. This exhibition is open to the public free of charge until 24 November.
