Students presented their experiences from across Europe – from the Baltic States through Central Europe to the Iberian Peninsula – as well as from destinations beyond the continent. Each story was unique, but they all shared a sense of openness, authenticity, and the desire to show that studying abroad is not just a challenge but, above all, an opportunity.
“It was the best decision I could have made for myself,” summarized Matěj Bajer, a computer science student, about his stay in South Korea. “Lisbon opened my eyes – I improved my English, gained insights into a different educational system, and made friends for life,” added Viktorie Řebcová, a primary education student. Similar sentiments echoed in other stories – about personal growth, new skills, cultural differences, and everyday experiences.
Europe Day at the Faculty of Education of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (FPE UWB) provided first-hand answers. Students who had completed international stays shared their experiences and practical advice with those still considering going abroad, demonstrating that anyone can take the leap. Throughout the event, lively discussions took place in the atrium about choosing the right school, arranging accommodation, securing scholarships, overcoming language barriers, and adapting to different cultures.
“Europe Day facilitated informal meetings between students who had been abroad, international students studying here, and those still contemplating a stay abroad. It created an open platform for sharing experiences, questions, and concerns – and that’s crucial for decision-making,” explained Tereza Havránková, Vice-Dean for Internationalization at FPE. “I believe that thanks to Europe Day, even more students will take the leap to study abroad. Whether it’s for language improvement, professional growth, or discovering other cultures – every experience outside the comfort zone is valuable,” added Tereza Havránková.
Students at the University of West Bohemia can participate in mobility programs through several schemes. The most well-known, Erasmus+, covers European destinations, while the INTER program enables study and work placements outside Europe. However, there are many other funding and support options available.
