New roof and modern interior including classrooms will be the most significant change of one of the buildings of Faculty of Education of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (FPE UWB). The renovations on Chodské náměstí in Pilsen should begin in autumn.

Hundreds of students and lecturers from FPE UWB will have to start the new academic year in temporary conditions on 16 September. Due to the extensive reconstruction of the building on Chodské náměstí, UWB was looking for alternative premises for one of its faculties, especially on the Bory campus. "We had to provide suitable facilities for more than 2,000 of our students who have been using the building on Chodské náměstí," said Pavel Mentlík, the dean of the Faculty of Education. The two largest departments - of pedagogy and of psychology - also had to move. "We are currently finishing unpacking and preparing the departments in the alternative premises so that teaching in the new academic year can proceed smoothly and without any complications," adds the dean.

According to the faculty's management, the long-awaited renovation will move the hundred years old building into the 21st century. The plan includes larger classrooms and laboratories as well as a better connection to the neighbouring building at 51 Klatovská Street, which will be minimally affected by the work. Currently, it is only possible to walk between the buildings through the courtyard. "The estimated cost of the reconstruction is over CZK 320 million. The majority of the costs should be covered by a subsidy from the Ministry of Education and Science, while approximately CZK 107 million will be paid by UWB from its own resources," said Martina Větrovská, director of the special-purpose facility Operations and Services of UWB.

The reconstruction period is estimated at 25 months. However, the German Language Department will not return to Chodské náměstí after the completion of the work, and the faculty will permanently relocate it to Veleslavínova Street. "Moving the German language department to the Veleslavínova building is a logical step that will greatly help the students. The building will now house all language departments in one place. Since students quite often combine two languages in their studies, this will certainly be a pleasant change for them as well," said Michaela Voltrová, head of the German language department.

Currently, the builders are also working on the facade of the faculty in Veleslavínova Street. The work is being supervised by conservationists and should be completed during September. The façade will return to its original appearance from the time the building was completed in 1865. The repairs will cost 16 million crowns from UWB's own resources.
