Benedikt Tolar's creative work is based on ecology and recycling. With his typically idiosyncratic humour, he critically reacts to the present, to the excess of materials and the lack of greenery. By connecting seemingly incompatible things, he creates - often even for himself - unexpected contexts. The resulting theme is usually based on the material itself, its properties, shape, colour. The artist often loses control over the creation of the work; it is, on the contrary, the material that in this case controls its author. The whole of Tolar's work works with the principle of chance. The artist piles up found objects in his studio, never guessing in advance what catches his eye, what he comes across in the bin on his way to work. This is how Duchampian ready-made objects are subsequently created under his hands. But beyond that, Tolar works with much more complex, artisanal and technically mastered processes. He creates beautiful artefacts from cut-off car roofs and bonnets, discarded vans or satellites, giving new life to otherwise forgotten, decaying objects. These objects may be striking in their simple expression, but they also invite reflection on deeper philosophical or spiritual contexts.
The curator of the exhibition is Kristýna Jirátová.
