How to get to Mars and what 3D printing can do – UWB brings its labs to Rokycany

Press Release Science and research Public

What do Mars, virtual reality, and designer furniture have in common? More than you could think. On Thursday, June 12, the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen will turn Masaryk Square in Rokycany into a pop-up lab and showcase its diverse fields of science.

On Masaryk Square in Rokycany, visitors will find around thirty science, technology, and art exhibits presented by the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (UWB). Students from the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art will showcase furniture they designed and built themselves. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering will demonstrate 3D printing – right before visitors’ eyes, small objects and key technical parts will be created from nothing. The Faculty of Health Care Studies will let children and adults step into the roles of both patient and healthcare provider, including simulations of examinations and care. And the UWB Robotics team will offer a glimpse into the future with technologies that may one day help explore other planets.

The University of West Bohemia continues its effort to bring science and technology closer to the general public – especially children and young people in regions beyond Pilsen, the main academic center. The goal is clear: to raise awareness of UWB in places where it currently has a smaller presence. At present, only 3% of UWB students come from the Rokycany district.

“If the university is to serve the whole region and inspire young people to engage with science, then we have to go out and meet them. Not everyone can come see us in Plzeň – and yet children in Klatovy, Tachov, or Rokycany are just as curious as anywhere else,” explains Jan Váně, UWB Vice-Rector for External Relations and Communication, on why researchers are heading to Rokycany this year after visiting Klatovy and Tachov last year.

“Science doesn’t have to stay locked up in labs – it can be out in the streets, among people, and that’s exactly what I like about this event,” says Tomáš Rada, Mayor of Rokycany. “I’m glad our town can host the Day of Science and Technology. I believe both children and adults will experience something that inspires them, sparks curiosity, and maybe even shapes their future.”

The UWB Day of Science and Technology is organized with the support of the Town of Rokycany and the Pilsen Region. It’s open to anyone who’s not afraid to ask “why?” and wants to learn more – regardless of age. Schools and the general public from across the district are warmly invited. Exhibits will be open on Thursday, June 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A full list of exhibits is available on the website dnyvedy.zcu.cz.
