High School Students Compared Their Technical English Skills at UWB

The finalists of the regional language competition Kontext gathered once again at UWB in Pilsen. This year’s edition of the high school contest brought together more than 4000 students from over 30 schools across the Pilsen Region, who worked with topics related to technology and leisure time.

More than eighty high school students from across the Pilsen Region gathered at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen in late January to compare their knowledge of technical English in the final round of the Kontext competition. The university holds the contest every year in cooperation with the Pilsen Region.

A total of 4,284 students from 33 schools participated in the seventh edition of the competition. They completed tasks in five categories based on school type and year of study. This year’s technical texts focused on technology and leisure time. To reach the finals, contestants had to pass four preliminary online rounds held at their home schools. Only the top performers in each category advanced to the in-person final round at the UWB campus.

In Pilsen, dozens of finalists first took an online test in the university’s computer labs. Only those with the highest scores progressed to the oral round before an expert panel. Winners in each category received vouchers for purchasing electronics, enrollment in language courses at the UWB International Summer Language School, and other commemorative gifts.

The Kontext language competition is a collaborative project between the Pilsen Region’s Department of Education, Youth and Sports, the UWB Institute of Applied Language Studies, and the UWB Department of Lifelong and Distance Learning. The goal is to develop students’ technical language literacy and to foster connections between regional high schools and the university environment.
