University of West Bohemia in Pilsen sold former Škoda Works headquarters for 190 million CZK

The former headquarters of Škoda Works in the centre of Pilsen has changed hands. The University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (UWB) sold the building for 190 million. Two serious bidders expressed interest in the long-disused property.

The sale of this iconic building, closely tied to Pilsen’s history, was concluded in cooperation with transaction advisers, who approached companies and entrepreneurs with both potential interest and the necessary financial backing. This targeted approach finally yielded a concrete result after several previous unsuccessful attempts to sell the property.

“We have offered the building for sale in the past, but none of the earlier bids met our conditions and expectations. It was only after our new transaction advisers began actively negotiating with potential investors that we received an offer that was acceptable for us both financially and in terms of other conditions,” explained UWB Rector Miroslav Lávička. The Academic Senate of the UWB adopted a favourable opinion on the planned sale, and the University’s Board of Trustees also approved it.

The new owner is LABEST Consulting, s.r.o., which has announced plans to refurbish the property into student housing, with reconstruction work expected to start later this year.

The university had owned the building since 2010. In recent years it had stood empty, yet its operating costs amounted to nearly 2 million crowns annually. “We had to act as a responsible householder, but the necessary investments would have been enormous, with zero return. That’s why the sale was inevitable,” said UWB bursar Martina Větrovská.

The university plans to invest the proceeds from the sale into further strategic development of the UWB. Specific projects have not yet been made public.
