Further Education Press Release Public

Dozens of diverse courses will reopen the doors of higher education at the University of the Third Age of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (U3V UWB) to the general public. Applications are open from today. There is great interest in physical activities, languages or finding family roots.

For the next academic year, U3V UWB will open courses for seniors in Pilsen and at 19 other branches - most recently in Přeštice and Chodov. By offering a large number of classes, the organisers and lecturers are trying to get closer to those students for whom studying in Pilsen is complicated mainly due to commuting. Interested students can find U3V branches in the Pilsen, Karlovy Vary and South Bohemia regions. "The support from the towns, municipalities and cooperating institutions where the teaching takes place is very important to us and we appreciate it very much. Although enrolment does not begin until the start of the new school year, we have been receiving enquiries about studying at U3V for several months in advance," says Kristýna Straková, coordinator of teaching at U3V branches.

There is a lot of interest in dozens of courses and topics every year. Nevertheless, the organisers try not to turn anyone away. If a course is full, they offer alternatives. "Whereas previously candidates were very interested in psychology, at the moment they are most interested in finding their family roots and foreign languages. This year we will open new courses in Pilsen, such as Italian, fruit growing, genealogy or architecture from the perspective of fine arts, hydrology or law. We always respond to the demand of our students, and at the end of each year we find out what they would be interested in next," explains Magdalena Toušová, head of U3V. U3V recruits students 60+ in retirement or people in the third degree of disability. Successful U3V graduates will graduate at the end of the academic year.

As an alternative to full-time study, the U3V UWB also offers online courses, which are available to all those who for various reasons cannot or do not want to come to school. "Online courses are studied from the comfort of your home via computer. These are not pre-recorded videos, the lectures are delivered live by the lecturer in the online space. After the lecture, listeners have the opportunity to ask questions. For the upcoming academic year, we have expanded our online program offerings; prospective students can choose from astronomy, history, or art. All you have to do is choose," says Markéta Brůžková, coordinator of online education. "No one needs to be afraid of modern technology. We will help with setting up an email, guide you through the first login to the virtual classroom," she adds.

Applications for U3V courses open in Pilsen on 2 September, and in 19 other cities in the first half of September. Details about the University of the Third Age can be found at U3V webpage..
