The Department of English Language and Lit. of the Faculty of Arts of UWB welcomed a guest lecturer

Talk Lecture Cooperation

Martin Stašek from the Directorate General for Translation of the European Commission delivered a guest lecture to the students of Foreign Languages for Commercial Purposes, and the students of International Relations at the Faculty of Arts, UWB about working for the EU as a translator.

On 5 April, students of the Faculty of Arts, UWB had the opportunity to learn more about the profession of translator in the European Union institutions. Martin Stašek from the Directorate General for Translation of the European Commission delivered an interactive lecture on languages, linguistic communication and translation within the EU. The audience, which included mostly students of Foreign Languages for Commercial Purposes, and students of International Relations, learned about the working conditions of translators in the EU, what types of texts they most often translate, who the most frequent clients are, what tools translators have at their disposal, and how much they earn for their work. The lecture was complemented by an online quiz with a competition for prizes of EU-themed promotional items. The topic was then lightened up by various translation gems and memes, some of which pointed out the limitations of machine translation. The human translator will certainly not be replaced by a machine in the near future, agreed the audience and the teachers present.
