Press Release Public Exhibition

Joining the ranks of remarkable personalities and institutions that influence global art are American designer Debbie Millman, The Glasgow School of Art, and Japanese IDEA Magazine. The Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art presents the prestigious award for the thirteenth time on 6th November.

"Ladislav Sutnar Award laureates have always represented the absolute pinnacle of individuals and institutions in the field of design and applied arts. A mere glance at the list of honorees makes it clear that this is an exceptional and elite selection,” said Vojtěch Aubrecht, Dean of the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art. “This year's laureates are also icons in the field that the Ladislav Sutnar Award focuses on, serving as trendsetters and captains steering the entire art sector. Their influence helps shape the development of current and future global aesthetics and design trends," he added.

This year, the award recognizes two international institutions and one international artist. American designer, illustrator, author, and educator Debbie Millman will receive the Ladislav Sutnar Award for her longstanding work and significant contributions across multiple domains of art and education, including her creative work, publications, and activities promoting design. She is a co-founder of the master’s program in branding at the School of Visual Arts in New York, and her illustrations have appeared in New York Magazine, among others.

The Glasgow School of Art is one of the most prestigious art universities in Europe and globally. Its representatives will receive the award for their impact on the development of art education and research, and for actively addressing global challenges through design. Japan’s renowned IDEA Magazine will also receive the Ladislav Sutnar Award for its contributions to graphic design, typography, and visual culture. Through its approach, the magazine enriches not only the field of design but also advances visual culture and supports its interdisciplinary growth.

The award ceremony will take place on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at 5 p.m. in the Ceremonial Hall of Pilsen’s town hall. The program will also include a meet-and-greet with the laureates and their lectures, which will be open to the public on Tuesday, November 5, starting at 2 p.m. at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art. Following the presentations, there will be an exhibition opening for Ladislav Sutnar Award 2024 / Laureates at the Inkubator Gallery.

The Ladislav Sutnar Award is a way for the faculty to honor exceptional Czech and international figures and institutions in art and education, especially in the field of applied arts and design. At the same time, the award pays tribute to the life and work of Pilsen-born, internationally recognized Czech-American designer Ladislav Sutnar, after whom both the faculty and the award are named.
