Just bring your own laptop and the rest of the equipment, such as professional monitors or a 3D printer, is available to share – this is the spirit of the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) concept, which Cowork UWB is now developing. Starting Monday, October 6, students and employees of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen can take full advantage of the coworking spaces in the Center for Informatization and Computer Technology building at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (CIV UWB) on the Bory campus. In addition, there are also adjustable tables, balance chairs, a relaxation area with a sofa, and lockable lockers. Access is possible with a JIS card on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The monitors that are part of the equipment are above standard, as is the 3D printer, which can be used with your own filament. "USB-C chargers are also available to those interested, and a stable internet connection via the eduroam network is a matter of course. The use of personal devices contributes to the Green IT approach, which reduces equipment costs while increasing user comfort," said Lenka Jirsová, director of CIV UWB.
Interest among students was evident from day one. "I've been working remotely as a developer since high school, so this space is definitely useful. It's more comfortable than the usual study rooms at the university. There's a difference between working on two monitors and working on one small laptop screen. I'm definitely more productive when I have two. At the same time, I see it as an opportunity to get to know classmates from other faculties, which I don't have time for during lectures," said Lukáš Protiva, a second-year student of Software Engineering at the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of West Bohemia, praising Cowork.
The coworking space expands the university campus's offerings. "Together with cafés, sports facilities, a self-service store, and other places, it creates an environment that supports the community life of the entire university," said Miroslav Lávička, rector of the University of West Bohemia. Cowork complements other activities of the Center for Informatization and Computer Technology, which include HelpDesk user support, a public computer classroom with powerful computers, an information screen system, kiosks for printing, scanning, and copying, an Internet of Things (IoT) lab, a student incubator, and a shared scooter project.
Students at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FEL) at the University of West Bohemia also have access to space for work and meetings. This spring, Co-Space was created here, expanding the possibilities for collaborative and individual work directly within the faculty environment. Students will find work tables, comfortable seating, table football, ping-pong, an interactive screen, and a small climbing wall. The space is used not only for learning and team projects, but also for informal meetings or short breaks during the day. The faculty is already preparing similar spaces on two other floors of the building. "Feedback from students has confirmed that such spaces make sense. That is why we want to offer them even more opportunities to work, meet, and feel comfortable," said faculty secretary Šárka Nová.
The faculty also includes Makerspace, which consists of a mechanical and electrical engineering laboratory. Here, students can try out modern technologies – from large-format laser plotters and three-axis CNC milling machines to 3D printers and professional equipment in the electrical engineering laboratory (oscilloscopes, generators, power supplies). Computer technology with specialized software, such as Altium, MATLAB, Ansys, SolidWorks, and AutoCAD, is also available. "Makerspace is primarily about creating and experimenting. Anyone with an idea can test it here in practice – from design to finished prototype. At the same time, it is a space where students inspire each other and acquire skills that are often not possible to try out in regular classes," added Bedřich Bednář, who is in charge of these student laboratories.
