The exhibition Čtyři v obraze a jeden ve vaně (Four in the Picture and One in the Bathtub) presents five prominent figures from the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, who were there at its inception or joined shortly thereafter. These are artists who have long shaped the school's educational and creative character: Mikoláš Axmann, Boris Jirků, Josef Mištera, Karel Míšek, and Benedikt Tolar. Their work has been on display at the Ladislav Sutnar Gallery in Pilsen since January 14. On Tuesday, February 17, at 5 p.m., visitors will have a unique opportunity to tour the exhibition with curator Daniela Kramerová and learn more about it. The last chance for an independent tour will be on Wednesday, February 18, when the exhibition ends.
Mikoláš Axmann is one of the leading Czech graphic artists and a figure who has long shaped the character of the graphic studio at Sutnarka. Boris Jirků was a long-time teacher of figural drawing, guiding thousands of students and consistently emphasizing drawing as the foundation of artistic education. The project also presents a selection of new works by the school's founder, Josef Mištera. His comprehensive exhibition in 2024 highlighted the breadth of his artistic scope and his fundamental influence on the faculty. Karel Míšek's work leans more towards graphic design than fine art. Míšek has influenced entire generations of designers with his theoretical and practical approach. Benedikt Tolar, head of the sculpture department, represents a younger generation, but is an equally strong pillar of the faculty – with his characteristic approach and original thinking, he brings new impulses and energy to the school and the artistic environment.
According to curator Daniela Kramerová, the exhibition Four in the Picture and One in the Bathtub presents not only five strong artistic personalities, but also significant creative poles that together form a solid foundation and character for the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art.
