"The question of what, how and why to continue to create and use, and how to build an emotional attachment to objects of consumption, including clothing and footwear, is becoming more and more urgent. For two semesters, we will focus on the topic of aesthetic sustainability with the students, with regard to reduced consumption and production and an emphasis on quality, durability and purpose," said Pavel Ivančic, head of the Fashion Design Studio at FDU UWB.
The result of the year-long sustainable work of students under his guidance is, for example, the collective project tubUs by PhD student Adela Fröhlich and 4th year students Eliška Svobodová, Eliška Kostohryzová, Veronika Konrádová and Patricia Štěrba. The students created knitted garment parts with regard to aesthetic trends and sustainable approach to fashion. The models are made of 100% merino wool. "The design of the collection was conceived with an emphasis on minimizing production waste. The basic construction principle is based on a simple tube, the shaping of which is supported by the natural elasticity of the knitted rib, which ensures maximum comfort and optimal adaptation to the anatomy of the human body," says Adéla Fröhlich about the "tubUs" project.
One of the elements of the exhibition of student fashion works is the RE.KEEN project, on which the studio collaborated with the American brand KEEN. The students were given KEEN shoes with the aim of breathing new life into them and turning them into unique design pieces. "RE.KEEN is the first circular shoe store in the Czech Republic. Our customers bring us their used KEEN shoes, we give them a significant discount on other shoes in exchange for them, and we circulate the old ones back to other customers. Instead of the shoes ending up in the garbage or incinerator, we give them a second life. And even the really worn-out ones - we give them to FDU students who will use them in their practical training," says Jan Štika, Brand Manager of KEEN, about the cooperation.
People can see the results of the students' efforts at the exhibition Less is more but that's not ALL! at the Ladislav Sutnar Gallery in Pilsen, which will show how craftsmanship can be combined with modern materials and technologies. The opening is scheduled for 9 April at 6 pm. Visitors can also look forward to two guided tours - the first will take place as part of the accompanying programme of the Freedom Festival on Saturday, 3 May at 11:00 and the second on Wednesday, 7 May at 17:00. Admission to the exhibition and the tours is free.
