Faculty Senate Student Chambers discussed university environment together for the first time

Student senators from all faculty senates of the UWB gathered for the first interfaculty conference of academic senators - UNIKAS 1.0. They discussed sustainable development, AI, mental health, and physical safety at UWB, along with presentations on international exchanges and the EUPeace alliance.

Each of them represents and votes on behalf of students in their respective faculty academic senates, addressing budgets, accreditations, and the development of a welcoming environment for students and staff. On Friday, February 21, student senators from across the university met at the University Library for the first-ever joint conference to exchange experiences beyond their faculty walls.

"We have long faced insufficient connections and collaboration between individual student chambers. Each chamber is isolated and focuses only on matters within its faculty. Based on our experience organizing the nationwide KAS 11.0 event at our university last year, we decided to hold this conference to establish best practices for more effective cooperation," said Matěj Líbal, secretary of the Student Chamber of the UWB Academic Senate and a student of the Faculty of Arts.

In addition to the attending student representatives, experts from the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen joined the discussions and presented university activities. The panel on sustainable development featured contributors to UWB’s Sustainability Strategy, including Vice-Rector Jan Váně, Faculty of Economics Vice-Dean Jiří Preis, and regional geographer Jan Kopp.

Artificial intelligence and its meaningful use in research and education were also discussed, led by Lucie Rohlíková, Head of Lifelong Learning, and her colleague Tomáš Pruner.

A roundtable on university safety, mental health, and physical security included contributions from university ombudsman Petr Šimon, Head of Security Jaroslav Vild, and psychologist and educator Martina Komzáková.

Another conference goal was to introduce student senators to the EUPeace university alliance, of which UWB has been a member since 2024. This was presented by Magdalena Rousová, Head of UWB’s International Office, and Lenka Pekárková from the Study Department. The discussion also covered opportunities for international study exchanges and internships.

"We believe the conference was a success, and we look forward to future editions in the coming years," added Matěj Líbal.

The UNIKAS 1.0 conference was made possible through funding from the Student Activities Grant Support and UWB leadership.
