The Minister for Science, Research and Innovation Marek Ženíšek visited on Thursday 7 November, the Faculty of Applied Sciences together with the MP Miloš Nový and the representative of the Pilsen Region Richard Pikner. Experts from the Department of Cybernetics and the NTIS research centre presented them the results of research, which is mainly related to health care. The delegation was welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty Miloš Železný, the Director of the NTIS Research Centre Pavel Novák and the Head of the Department of Cybernetics Vlasta Radová. During the excursion, the topic of research funding and support for further research activities was also raised. Pavel Novák highlighted the success of the teams in attracting projects, thanks to which it is possible to secure financial support for quality research.
Faculty representatives toured selected laboratories with the guests and introduced them to specific projects being addressed in the Department of Cybernetics and the NTIS Centre. "I am happy to present the results of our research, because what we are engaged in, and what at first glance seems like a technical field, has a great overlap with biomedicine," said Miloš Železný.
The Minister and other members of the delegation visited a total of seven sites. Jindřich Matoušek introduced them to the issues of speech-to-text synthesis and voice cloning. Luboš Šmídl presented research on telemedicine self-examination of speech and memory for rapid detection of cognitive disorders using machine learning methods. Aleš Pražák explained how the subtitling of programmes for Czech Television takes place. Lukáš Picek talked about the applications he helped develop, which are designed to protect not only nature but also human health. Marek Hrúz presented the topic of sign language recognition and synthesis for the deaf, which he also worked on during an international workshop at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The tour ended with Miroslav Jiřík, who presented two areas of research in which he is involved. The first was an AI-assisted online surgical suturing tutorial project, and the second was research aimed at developing tools to support biomedical research, particularly with respect to liver surgery and multiscale vascular analysis.
"In the Czech Republic, we have many scientific workplaces that focus on innovation and connecting science with practice. One of these institutions is the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, specifically the Faculty of Applied Sciences, which I was able to visit today. It is proof that innovations in AI are helping very strongly also in medicine, which cannot do without it. I very much appreciate the efforts for interdisciplinarity and the work that colleagues from the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the Czech University of Technology are doing," said Minister for Science, Research and Innovation Marek Ženíšek.
The Minister continued his visit to the Pilsen Region after the end of his visit to ZČU. Together with the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Markéta Pekarová Adamová, they visited the Mental Health Centre and then the Klaus Timber a.s. company in Dvorec u Nepomuku.
