Graduates of Sutnarka present their books at the prestigious biennale in the Alexandria library

Alumni Achievements Exhibition

Eva Majerová, Agáta Vodičková (Mrózková), and Alžběta Nemcová, graduates of the Book Design and Paper Shaping Studio at Sutnarka, are currently showcasing their books to an international audience at the prestigious BA International Biennale for the Artist's Book in the Alexandria Library.

Tajemství rybníků (The Secrets of Ponds), Obojživelníci (Amphibians), and Black and Green are the titles of the original books created by graduates of the Book and Paper Shaping Studio at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art, now on display at the biennale in Alexandria, Egypt. These works stand out for their use of various creative techniques. "Alžběta Nemcová's works Black and Green, as well as Agáta Vodičková's Otisky vzpomínek (Impressions of Memories), represent the concept of a freely interpreted artist's book. The authors pour illustrations from colored paper pulp through a sieve, creating individual sheets that are then bound together into a book using Japanese binding. On the other hand, Eva Majerová presents spatial pop-up books titled Tajemství rybníků (The Secrets of Ponds) and Vzpomínky z cest (Travel Memories), while Alžběta Nemcová showcases another book, Obojživelníci (Amphibians)," explains Petra Soukupová, head of the Book and Paper Shaping Studio.

The books are on display at the Alexandria Library in Egypt from September 4th to 24th. "All the authors demonstrated exceptional talent during their studies. The books we sent to the Alexandria Library exhibition were created during their time at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art," says Petra Soukupová.

Eva Majerová graduated from the Book and Paper Shaping Studio and continued her master’s studies in the Comics and Children's Book Illustration Studio. After graduating from the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art, she works as an assistant in the Book and Paper Shaping Studio. During her studies, she successfully participated in many industry competitions. She specializes in pop-up book technology, which she also teaches at the faculty.

Agáta Vodičková (Mrózková) is also a graduate of the bachelor's program in the Book and Paper Shaping Studio and continued her master's studies in the Graphic Studio at Sutnarka. She focuses on book restoration, handmade paper creation, and illustration. During her studies, she received several awards for her original books.

Alžběta Nemcová is a highly versatile artist who also started at Sutnarka in the Book and Paper Shaping Studio and continued her master's studies in the Graphic Studio. Her pop-up books are remarkable for their complex technical execution and combination of various techniques and materials. In addition, she is an excellent illustrator and also engages in animated creation.

"I believe that participating in the BA International Biennale for the Artist’s Book in Alexandria is a great opportunity to showcase the diverse work of the Book and Paper Shaping Studio abroad. The artist’s books exhibited at the BA represent a cross-section of possibilities in book creation, ranging from book-objects to technically challenging pop-up books," concludes Petra Soukupová.

The Czech Republic's representation at the biennale was supported by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Cairo and the Czech Centers Egypt.
