How much does a leaking toilet cost? And what about a tap that has not been turned off properly? Most of us naturally try to save water, but few of us know how much we actually use every day. Join František Mach, a researcher at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of West Bohemia, who co-founded the startup nextdrop with his colleagues. He will introduce a small device that can monitor water consumption even in some of Pilsen’s largest institutions. We will take a live online look inside the systems at Pilsen Zoo, FC Viktoria Plzeň’s stadium and even the Rock for People festival.

František Mach’s lecture will launch a new Science Live series at the University Library, where researchers from the University of West Bohemia will present current research and show how their work connects with our everyday lives.

On Tuesday, 3 November, Jindřich Matoušek from the Faculty of Applied Sciences will focus on voice cloning in the age of AI and show how current technologies can create a convincing copy of a human voice from just a limited amount of recorded material. A month later, on 8 December, Pavel Vařeka and Tomáš Pancíř from the Faculty of Arts will present the findings of archaeological research into the US Army’s 109th Evacuation Hospital in Pilsen’s Borský Park. They will explore what archaeological evidence can reveal about the presence of the American liberators in Pilsen in 1945.
