"The whole space has become visually larger and brighter," said Jana, a student from the Faculty of Law at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. Her classmate Jitka appreciated the new acoustic chairs. "It is pleasant to sit here and study in peace," said student Tomáš from the Faculty of Arts. The overall and partial changes are the result of the second stage of the reconstruction of the historically protected building of the Arts and Law Library at sady Pětatřicátníků 16 in Pilsen. The University first managed to replace the historic windows and then modernise the spaces on the third floor.
In January of this year, the library had to be out of commission to allow for a complete replacement of the free-choice equipment on the third floor. As a result, visitors can now enjoy new bookshelves, study tables, acoustic chairs, seating bags and mobile screens. It is the acoustic chairs that provide greater privacy and quiet for working or reading, thanks to the high side walls at head level that absorb sound.
"The previous library equipment was already outdated, in some cases even inadequate. The library must also move with the times and provide visitors with the best possible conditions for study and self-development. Thanks to the subsidy from the project, we were able to provide our users with a more pleasant, comfortable and peaceful environment for studying, relaxing and meeting each other," said Lenka Fajmanová, head of the Arts and Law Library.
The modernisation of the library is part of the project Revitalisation of partial libraries, which UWB has been implementing since 2023. The reconstruction was made possible thanks to a subsidy from the IROP programme of the Ministry of Regional Development.
