How much time does it take to prepare a lesson, or how should one respond to unexpected questions from the class? These were just some of the challenges tackled by students of the Faculty of Education at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (FPE UWB). For some, it was their very first experience; for others, it was a practicum tied to the completion of their studies.
Mentor teachers from Pilsen’s partner schools and other educators from the region provided students with insights into the full scope of a teacher's responsibilities. Thanks to their expert advice and support, students experienced real-life classroom situations and gained valuable experience for their future professional development.
“Teaching practice is an essential part of preparing future teachers. Through collaboration with mentor teachers and other educators, students not only learn how to work with pupils but also reflect on their role in the educational process,” said Lenka Benediktová, Vice-Dean for Teaching Practice at the Faculty of Education UWB.
Academic staff and subject didactics specialists who visited students during their practicum witnessed firsthand the indispensable role of schoolteachers in the education of future educators. “Their example, guidance, and feedback help students not only develop pedagogical skills but also shape their attitude toward a profession that is both demanding and immensely fulfilling,” Benediktová added.
The Faculty of Education at UWB has long emphasized teaching practice as a key component of teacher education. Mentor teachers are experienced educators involved in the Ministry of Education’s project Support System for Mentor Teachers, which aims to enhance the quality of teaching practicums for future teachers. As part of this project, mentor teachers regularly receive training at the faculty, support students throughout their practicum, provide expert guidance and feedback, and help them navigate the initial challenges of the teaching profession.
