Start your story at UWB: Hanka from FZS helps patients to cope with their situation better

Students Education

In elementary school she enjoyed science and wanted to help people. So she went on to medical school and that passion never left her. After graduating from UWB, she will be a general nurse who will help people get back to normal life. You too can find your calling at UWB.

She manages his practice and studies at the Faculty of Health Studies of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (FZS UWB) with the activities of the student association and membership in the Academic Senate of UWB with an overview. Hana Arbetová is studying General Nursing and is already in the third year of her Bachelor's degree. How does she evaluate her studies at UWB and student life in general?

  • What surprised you more on your first day at university—the difficulty of the subjects or the price of lunch in the cafeteria?
It was more the difficulty of the courses, because I have never been to the canteen (laughs). Or rather, I visited it once. The food wasn't bad, but since I have a busy schedule, I usually don't have the opportunity to get to the canteen in Bory, and in Kollárovka the food is ordered, which is complicated for me. So I often cook my own food.

  • If you had to describe your field as a movie genre, would it be a thriller, comedy, or sci-fi?
I would say comedy. Of course nursing is an important and serious job, but sometimes funny incidents happen and funny situations arise. We have to be cheerful because if we are sad or angry, the patients will not handle their situation well. So we try to joke with patients when we can. It is important for patients to see a smile because when you smile, the other person smiles too.

  • What's your best survival trick for exam season?
TV series, lately especially those with a medical theme. Firstly, I look for mistakes in them and secondly, I tell myself that when I'm not studying, I watch a series in my field. I also like to play computer games and draw.

  • What was your biggest "I see" moment during your studies? Is there something you wish you had known in your first year?
Bachelor. It is not as simple as it might seem. It would have been good to start much earlier than I did.

  • If you could give your first-year self one piece of advice, what would it be?
Enjoy student life more. Not just going to internships, going home and studying. I mean, it was nice, but maybe I could have taken a break once in a while.

  • Imagine you have 30 seconds to convince a prospective student to choose your faculty. What would your "ad" sound like?
There are many events at UWB, the possibility to choose to study C-level subjects at other faculties within UWB and the possibility to choose internships. We are trying to cooperate more as students, it is possible to join a student association.

  • What’s the biggest myth about university studies that you’d like to debunk?
I don't think I know of any myth as such. Studying is hard, but it can be done, and the transition from high school is not that difficult.

  • What's the most bizarre health myth you've heard from friends or family since they've known you're studying health studies?
Fortunately, nothing like that happened to me because one grandmother was a nurse and the other grandmother was a lab technician, so practically my whole family is steeped in healthcare. The rest of the family are engineers and I.T.s. Nothing from friends either, but for example, patients often ask when we insert a cannula if they can move their arm without hurting "the needle". But there is no needle, there is a plastic tube, so I reassure them that they can move their arm.

Studying during the day or late-night cramming?
Night boning up on, only at night.

Cafeteria or instant noodles?
Instant noodles. I love Chinese food. But if I had the time during the day to go to Bory's canteen and have local Chinese food, I'd probably come here. The food prices here are really great.

Front row in a lecture or in the back by the power outlet?
We have outlets everywhere. We have newly renovated classrooms in the Faculty of Health Sciences and we have tables with drawers. And I sit about in the middle, I can't see the blackboard from a distance (laughs).

Group projects or doing everything solo?
Honestly I prefer to do everything myself, I need to have everything my own way.

Oral or written exams?
Depends on the subject. With some lecturers it's more the oral one, the examiner always pulls something out of me and offers some rescue questions. They don't really come up in written exams.

Early exam or last-minute?
Clearly pre-dates. Of course we have regular deadlines, but because of the large number of courses for fewer credits we have to meet them, so we start as soon as possible. And then it's also nice to have at least a week off if you get everything done early.

You can apply to the Faculty of Health Studies at UWB until 31 March 2025. It offers seven bachelor's degree programmes. Don't wait and start your story by applying to UWB.
