Sutnarka seeks new artistic talents, invites candidates to Open Day and opens admissions

Study Press Release

A unique opportunity to explore the faculty and its studios, meet faculty members and current students, and gather information about study programs and the admissions process awaits at the Open Day at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art (FDU). The event takes place on Friday, November 8th.

Last year, over 900 applicants sought admission to the bachelor’s degree program at the Faculty of Design and Art at the University of West Bohemia (UWB). “For this academic year, we were able to admit only 243 students. In recent years, most applications for the bachelor’s program have been submitted to the Comics and Illustration for Children and Media Illustration,” stated FDU Dean Vojtěch Aubrecht. In the master’s program, the greatest interest currently lies in Didactic Illustration, Photography, and the previously mentioned Comics and Illustration for Children studio.

On the second Friday in November, all prospective and current secondary school graduates will be offered a unique insight into the artistic environment. Applicants will tour the spaces where students create and will have the opportunity to ask anything they wish to know. “Participants will be able to join three discussion blocks, providing time to address individual questions. The event is open to everyone interested in bachelor’s, follow-up master’s, or doctoral studies,” added Marta Kollerová, the vice-dean for study and teaching affairs.

The success of the faculty’s graduates proves that it has much to offer young people. Today, alumni work in graphic design, advertising, or interior design studios, teach at art schools, establish their own studios, or work as freelance artists. Applicants have until November 29 to submit their applications and portfolios.

The Open Day is part of the year-round program “Journey to Sutnarka,” which offers applicants the chance to get better acquainted with the faculty and prepare for their studies throughout the academic year. The faculty regularly organizes public courses in both winter and summer semesters, the Teendesign art competition, the ArtCamp summer school of art, and in October, Demo Entrance Exams, which help applicants understand the entire admissions process.

The full program for FDU’s Open Day, including admissions requirements, can be found on the faculty’s website. The other eight faculties of UWB will open their doors to applicants in early 2025, on January 27 in Cheb and January 28 in Pilsen.
