At the 13th prestigious international conference dedicated to plasma technologies and their applications (the 13th Asian-European International Conference on Plasma Surface Engineering) hosted by Busan, Republic of Korea from November 5th to 8th, 2023, Pilsen scientist Professor Jindřich Musil was honored. He actively worked at the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS) of the University of West Bohemia (UWB) in Pilsen until recently. Professor Musil was recognized for his outstanding contributions and excellent results in the field of discharge plasma and its applications in surface engineering.

"I am genuinely pleased with Professor Musil's award, among other reasons, because as his former doctoral student, I had the opportunity to closely participate in research whose results have been and continue to be appreciated internationally. At the same time, I firmly believe that we will be able to maintain this high standard," says Pavel Baroch, head of the department of physics.

This esteemed expert in plasma physics, electromagnetic fields, radar engineering, and thermonuclear fusion is also the recipient of a state award for developing technology for thin-film deposition. In the past, he has received also three physics awards from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and the Bunshah Award for a significant contribution to the development of advanced nanocomposite materials from the American Vacuum Society. In recent years, his research at the physics department has focused primarily on high-speed reactive magnetron sputtering of thin-film materials and the study of new advanced nanocomposite materials with unique properties. He played a key role in the development of a new generation of nanocomposite coatings characterized by high hardness, toughness, as well as high elasticity and resistance to cracking.

"However, this was not the only success at this conference. This significant international event confirmed the growing international prestige of the research team from the department of physics at the Faculty of Applied Sciences. In addition to the aforementioned significant award for Professor Musil, the program also included two invited lectures by Professor Jaroslav Vlček and Professor Petr Zeman from the department of physics. Both were part of the functional thin-film materials section and were very well received by conference participants. Professor Vlček also accepted the award at the gala evening on behalf of Professor Musil, who could not attend the conference in person," adds Pavel Baroch.
