The Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of West Bohemia is celebrating its 35th anniversary. According to the dean, it is an ambitious lady of science.

Dean, if FAVka were a woman, what kind of personality would she have?
An intelligent, beautiful, ambitious young lady who is celebrating her 25th birthday for the eleventh time (laughs). She enjoys sports and playing musical instruments. She listens to classical music, brass band music, and heavy metal. She likes to be the center of attention, which she succeeds in doing, given her results.

How has FAVka changed since its founding?
The original departments have been expanded to include geomatics and civil engineering departments. FAVka has built the NTIS research center, which bears the European Center of Excellence label. Thanks to this, it moved to a new building in 2014. It now has equipment that enables top-level research. It offers master's degree programs in secondary school teaching mathematics, physics, and computer science, as well as bachelor's degree programs in mathematics. It participates in interesting projects, often with an international dimension.

What do you think FAV has achieved recently?
Experts from the Department of Physics and the NTIS research center are participating in a project from the Top Research call entitled Quantum Materials for Applications in Sustainable Technologies (QM4ST). Winning this project is a prestigious achievement for FAV, the NTC research center with which FAV is collaborating, and the entire University of West Bohemia. However, there have been many successful events, from achievements in the field of top-level research to contract research projects to the successes of our students in various competitions and supported events for high school students.

Where is FAV heading now? What is its goal?
To be a natural leader in education and research in our fields and an important institution at the national and international levels. To focus our efforts on new fields, such as quantum computing. To offer top-level education that will satisfy both graduates, who have found interesting jobs, and their new employers, who will have gained experts to help them move forward. To be a friendly institution where everyone feels comfortable and enjoys working, studying, or cooperating with it.

What message would you like to convey to the readers of this interview?
Some time ago, I read a comment on the internet that "for those who did not study mathematics, physics, or chemistry in their youth, the world is full of strange miracles and mysterious surprises." I would add: come and study technical or natural sciences, and you will understand the principles on which these "miracles" are based. After all, learning and discovering new things is a fascinating adventure.
