The Faculty of Applied Sciences and the Academia Film Olomouc Festival are in tune

Scientists captivated the audience of the film show with lectures on the artificial voice of Karel Gott, the digitization of archives and cadastral maps, cooperation with the Bone Marrow Donor Registry, and an intelligent assistant for doctors.

For the first time, the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS) of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen participated in the international festival of popular science films Academia Film Olomouc, which was organized by Palacký University in Olomouc from 23 to 28 April.

Although primarily a film festival, the program includes lectures, workshops, discussion panels, and music events. Each year, several domestic and international guests from across the disciplines visit the festival. Visitors can meet filmmakers or personalities from the field of science.

Four speakers from FAS presented during the program, with the Department of Cybernetics having the largest representation. The activities of one of the teams were presented by Jindřich Matoušek with the Gott Forever project, which continues to be of great interest to the public. Martin Bulín presented the NKVD/KGB archives, the digitization of which the FAV collaborated with the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and Ukrainian archivists. Lucie Houdová presented FAV's cooperation with the Bone Marrow Donor Registry and other institutions, both on the level of technical support and medical research. She emphasized the importance of this cooperation, which increases the chances of recovery for cancer patients. Pavel Král from the Department of Informatics and Computer Science presented two projects. The first one concerned the digitization of old cadastral maps, and the second lecture was about an intelligent assistant that can process a patient's medical records and prepare a list of codes for diagnoses, procedures, drugs, or materials for the doctor or clinical coder to report to the health insurance company.

We are pleased that all of the above-mentioned lectures were well received by the audience, and after the lectures were over, there was still discussion and debate about the possibilities of cooperation.
