The Vice-Rector of the University of West Bohemia (UWB) and Professor of Sociology, Jan Váně, is the new member of the Research, Development, and Innovation Council. His nomination was approved by the government at its session on November 13, 2024, and takes effect on November 16, 2024.
“I see this as a major success for the University of West Bohemia as a whole. It reflects the work of the rector, fellow vice-rectors, and certain deans, as well as our efforts to expand the university’s prestige and strengthen its significance. This wouldn’t be possible without the scientific achievements of our colleagues,” said Jan Váně regarding his election.
UWB’s Rector, Miroslav Lávička, also praised the appointment of Vice-Rector Váně to the Research, Development, and Innovation Council. “I am delighted. This is, first and foremost, a major personal achievement for Vice-Rector Váně, to whom I extend my sincere congratulations and thanks for his work. At the same time, it is a significant recognition for our entire university. This nomination gives us the opportunity to contribute more directly to shaping Czech research and innovation,” stated Rector Miroslav Lávička. He believes that the appointment of UWB’s Vice-Rector to the Council will undoubtedly enhance the university’s capacity to expand its influence in both academic and professional spheres.
For the University of West Bohemia, this represents another accomplishment in scientific diplomacy this year, following the signing of agreements and strategic partnerships with international companies and institutions, such as the Pilsen Region and other universities.
The Research, Development, and Innovation Council is responsible for evaluating science in the Czech Republic. Research organizations are divided into three segments for evaluation: universities, institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and sectoral research organizations and industrial research institutions. Their quality is assessed using five basic modules: quality of selected results, research performance, societal relevance of research, sustainability, and strategy and vision. An important criterion is also the assessment of the level of international cooperation of individual research organizations. The Council is chaired by the Minister for Science and Research, Marek Ženíšek.
